The Mavic Platinum is an awesome drone as it is. It's a big improvement over the original Mavic, mainly in how quiet it flies which is incredible compared to the old one.

In the class range you're looking at, you're already getting the best all-rounder for the price. The Mavic is a compact option, if you wanted something more fully fledged, you may want to look at the top-of-the-line Phantom. 

The Mavic Platinum was just released and is an incremental upgrade, so I'd say the next Mavic probably won't be for at least 6 months or a year. 

You can wait for the newest one, but I'd say go for what you know is good now, experience it and you'll be able to make a more experienced judgement on what you want to upgrade to in the future. There will always be better models coming out, but to get started the Platinum is the best option right now.
