Advantages of a Sub Tank?

Hey fellow offroaders.

Something that kept me busy thinking the last couple of days is my sub tank. To be honest I don't really see the point of having a second tank instead of just a larger long range tank. You basically just driving more gear around and there are more parts (fuel pump) involved that are prone to break. Can you enlighten me and tell me what's the purpose of having a sub tank? Just scratching my head.

Just a guess/personal thoughts/opinion here, but I would think that it's down to several reasons... Firstly is the simplicity of the tanks themselves... It's far easier and cheaper to just whack a basic rectangular box in place, rather than spend the extra time/money/r&d to install a high-capacity tank during the initial design stage... Another reason I think, is in most vehicles, (just for an example, 70 Series LandCruiser's with their 180L total capacity), it would be impossible to fit a single 180L tank in the same place as one 90L, hence the two easily fitted 90's... and a last reason I think, is they take into account (maybe) that if one tank should fail, you don't lose 140-180L of fuel, there is still the backup tank to get out of trouble... These points may or may not be correct, as I say, just my thoughts/opinions, but they make sense to me... :)

i'm with Hills.. I guess the 'backup' factor would do it for some as well!
